Don’t want to do your own social media? We hear you.

Social media doesn’t come easy to everyone.
Some people make social media look so easy. They know what to post. They know how to be funny. They have great little graphics. And then some of us just sit and stare at the screen thinking, “My instant coffee is never going to look like their fancy caffe latte.” You’re not a failure. You’re just not a social media person. And that’s actually ok.
Yes you have to do social media. But you don’t have to be the one to do it.
You have probably noticed that there’s all these gurus and experts out there who are telling us all how to do social media, right? And the way they talk, you’d think we all have to work in marketing. And they’re kind of right. We all have to market out businesses. But these days, you don’t have to know how to do it all yourself.
But should I still try to do it myself?
Everyone should probably give it a go. Here’s a few things to think about before you do…
Why you should do your own social media
You know your business
No one knows your business quite the way you do. Chances are that you starting it up because you love what you do, or it’s a family business, so it has real significance to you and our family – maybe even your town. Either way, it’s your thing and should be your voice that promotes it.
You’ll save money
Doing your own social media means that you don’t have to pay someone else to do it for you. After all, they’ll probably not understand your business without actually being there. And they justy won’t do it in a way that feels right. And how can they? After all, it’s not their business or livelihood.
You keep control
This business didn’t get to where it is today by giving control of part of it to someone else, right? To get through previous hard times, you had to make hard decisions. You had to take the reins and keep hold of them. Whether you started this thing or inherited it, it should be under your control.
Why you SHOULDN’T do your own social media
You don’t know what you’re doing
When you have a leak, you get in a plumber. When you need to build a house, you get in a builder. When you want to light up the house, you get an electrician to install the lights. Those things all take skill and experience. So does social media. Sure, you can stick up some photos and write some words, but xan you make them reach people and and motivate them?
You’ll do a half-arsed job
You know what it’s like when you don’t want to do something. It becomes a chore. And there’s already a hundred chores a day to do. And now there’s this social media chore to add to them. And when you are forced to do something you don’t want to do and don’t really know how to do, you’ll end up doing a half-arsed job of it. You know you will.
You’ll waste time & money
We don’t just manage social media for businesses. We train businesses how to do their own social media all the time. And the one thing that they tell us all the time when they DIY their social media, is that they would never have done it if they knew how long it would take. And time spent on social media is time spent not doing this stuff that makes you money.
When you add up the time, lost productivity and cost to your own wellbeing, forcing yourself to learn how to do social media when you really don’t want to, is not the saving you originally thought it might be. So what’s next?
